Pens Announce Fan Rewards

Not to say I told you so, but the Penguins announced today that they will be offering fan initiatives throughout the first four home games of the season this year. All fans who attend one of the first four games will receive three vouchers for free food and drink, and all Pens merchandise will be half off at “Pens Gear” stores at Consol and Southside Works. Read the whole thing here.

If you are a fan of the Penguins this should not come as a surprise to you. Say what you will about the sterile, corporate sponsorship on every single wall inside Consol, say what you will about charging people for playoff “White Out” shirts, but there are very few corporate entities with a better public image and a better sense of civic responsibility.

Yes I appreciate that ultimately this is a marketing ploy. Yes I appreciate that the Penguins are a business, this is a business decision, and it has nothing to do with human emotions. But do you seriously have to ask if this is going to be popular with the fans? Is there any question that it will restore whatever apathy has been created in the Penguins’ fanbase?

Sure fans of other teams are going to point the finger and laugh and try to assert that this is “shameless,” or that somehow the Pens are hurting for fans. But we know the truth–this really does come down to Mario looking at the state of things and saying, “Hey, we’ve got the money, this was unfortunate for everyone, and we have the power to make it right.” And that’s just what he did.

If you think it’s cheesy, that’s fine. But for me this is just further proof that the Penguins, Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are some of the most honest and legitimate people out there.

Dapper Dan Man of the Year every year. Voted the greatest athlete in Pittsburgh history, and he legitimately cares about the fans, suck it.
