Gameday #2 Recap: @ NYRPosted: 20/01/2013
Vokoun with the start. Another tough road game to open the season.
Literally 2 seconds in, Tanner Glass fights Aaron Asham. Rick Nash goes to the box immediately afterwards, Neal scores (Malkin & Letang). Easy. 2nd of the season. MSG is now playing 45 by the Gaslight Anthem…very respectable. Tangradi with an intense few shifts of forechecking.
Great chance for Letang coming from Crosby’s patience. Forecheck in general looks good.
Vokoun looks good early – sharp. Ranger’s forecheck looks good. Brad Boyle gets hauled down by Despres. Sutter goes off because of some bizarre rule on the face-off. 5-on-3. Callahan scores. Not much Vokoun can do. Torts runs his mouth to the refs. Martin blocks a bunch of shots. Pens kill the second penalty. Vokoun makes a few saves to keep the game even.
Vokoun keeps a few out of the net after a Despres turnover.
Crosby lays a hit on Carl Hagelin. Vokoun makes a few more huge saves. Seems that the Rangers are going after Vokoun.
Joe Vitale makes a power move to the net, finished up by TK. TK now with 2 goals, tied with Neal. 2-1 Pens. Momentum swings. Great chance for Crosby. Few great shifts. Despres still looks overly confident.
Rangers get away with a too many men penalty. Typical MSG. Letang breaks up a play that leads to another great chance for Vitale/Glass. Niskanen rifles a puck from the point, deflects off Girardi. [Soft goal.] 3-1 Pens.
Cooke takes a bad tripping penalty.
Interesting observation by one of the Ranger’s announcers: Pens spent too much time in the offensive zone and didn’t feel comfortable in their own zone. I think the Pens just look more resilient than last year.
Rangers start on the PP. Killed. Crosby gets a few solid chances in transition.
4th line gets some sustained posession in the offensive end. Looked good.
Vokoun makes another great save off the face-off. Game changer.
Rangers take some penalty. Malkin makes a beautiful pass after a bad clear to Dupuis. 4-1 Pens. Marty Biron comes in for King Henrik. Pens PP looks reeeaaaallll good.
Pens sustain a possession in the Ranger’s zone for a solid minute against the Blue Shirt’s top line. Pen’s transition D looks great as well. Tangradi redirects one just wide. He looks like he’s finally getting the Big Dawg legs under him. Icing against the Rangers. They take a timeout.
Biron looks strong coming out of the TO. Rick Nash tries some spin move. Vokoun makes the save.
Brad Richards takes another strange penalty with 1 minute left in the period. Staal goes ofter seconds after for delay of game. 5-on-3 for the Pens. Can’t do anything by the end of the period.
Pens dominated play throughout the second period.
Pens start te period 5-on-3 for a minute. Rangers kill it. Good chances. Pens back on the forecheck. 10-46-27 line looks really good, especially for a a 4th line.
Mike Rupp almost finds twine, but he’s Mike Rupp.
More sustained pressure from 25-71-18. Ends in Malkin finding Neal in the slot. Lamp city. James Neal (3). That feels good. Martin with another assist, Malkin with 3 assists at this point.
Taylor Payatt scores a meaningless goal from the slot. Engelland missed his man. 5-2 Pens.
Neal takes a slashing penalty. PK kills it. Pen’s PK has killed 8 of 9 penalties it’s faced. Nice.
Vokoun makes a nice save on Del Zotto. Pen’s PP on a Stu Bickel penalty. Rick Nash with a short handed goal. Bad pass by Malkin, stolen, breakaway. PP over.
Rangers storming. Marian Gaborik sucks. McDonough and Addams go off with offsetting minors. 4-on-4. Kris Letang with the empty net goal. 6-3 Pens.
Orpik laid a huge hit on Kreider in open ice. He was skating with his head down. Kreider goes straight to the dressing room under his own strength. Pens win 6-3.
- Kris Letang showed great patience tonight. I like it a lot.
- Vokoun looked pretty good. Made some great saves. He’ll give Fleury a rest and will be a luxury.
- Malkin with 3 assists. Looks to me like he’ll continue rolling.
- Despres looked better, but still overconfident. But he did look way better than yesterday. Tangradi had a few opportunities. He’s getting there.
- Dupuis and Kennedy are playing real well right now. TK with #2 of the year, Duper with his first tally. Both hitting and skating hard. Good to see.
- Crosby with his first point of the season. He’s playing on the PK and he’s doing well. Good to see him getting a different look this year. He had a couple of really solid chances as well.
- Niskanen looked great, again. He keeps getting better.
- Orpik played a really great game. Physical is an understatement.
Good game. See you Wednesday against the Leafs.
