Pirates Spring Training results. Where do Pirate’s rank in MLB Future Rankings?

****Your Pirates are 2-2 in Grapefruit League*****

2/23–3-2 win vs Rays

**Jeff Locke is competing for the 5th SP spot and had a strong outing. He threw 3 hitless innings with one walk, one strikeout and earned the victory.

**Marte had a single, run, and SB.

2/24—9-2 win vs Braves

**James McDonald walked one, struck out one and settled down in the second inning after needing 21 pitches to get through the first. He used just eight pitches to get three outs in the second, working a little faster than he’s used to in an effort to keep his defense involved.

**He will be a huge factor for this year’s team.  Last year’s first half he was a Cy Young candidate and his second half of last year, he went 3-5 with a 7.52 ERA.

**Clint Barmes went 2 for 2 with a two-run homer for the Pirates

**Jason Grilli, who got the win, struck out two and walked one in his first appearance of the spring.

**Cutch went 0-2.

**Russell Martin stole a base.

**Melancon, who came in Hammer trade, pitched one inning and gave up two hits and one earned run.

2/25—5-4 loss vs Twins

**Pirates had 13 hits

**Tabata had a HR

**McPherson, who is battling for the 5th SP spot threw 2 innings and only giving up one hit. Only took him 12 pitches too.

**”For Kyle’s first time out, our biggest interest was in the up and down twice,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “Obviously, we’re going to monitor him and not give him too many innings. We’ve got plenty of time to get his pitch count where it needs to be.”

**McPherson, a September call-up by the Pirates, said that experience helped prepare him for competing for a spot this spring training. McPherson had a 2.73 ERA in 10 appearances last season with the Pirates, including three starts.

**J Gomez gave up 4 ER. Three runs came off Justin Morneau’s bases clearing double. He was acquired in January this year. I wrote about him ealier. He has time in the bigs and might have a shot a long relief.

2/26 Postponed vs Orioles

2/27—8-2 loss vs Rays

**The Pirates made three errors in the first two innings, which led to three unearned runs.

**Right fielder Brad Hawpe let a bloop hit bounce past him, third baseman Pedro Alvarez flubbed a high popup and second baseman Neil Walker overthrew 6-foot-4 first baseman Garrett Jones. A wild pitch by A.J. Burnett allowed another run to score.

**Burnett, Wandy, Cole, Grilli, and Hughes pitched. 5 runs were earnerd

**Tabata had two doubles. That was probably only positive out of the game.

**ESPN conducted a Future Power Rankings. They came in at 25. Below them are the White Sox, Brewers, Indians, Marlins, and Rockies. Insiders of ESPN can only see it. Image
